The UK bank sector's strong first-half performance has increased the chance of a domestic bank countering the Spanish Santander Central Hipano's bid for Abbey National, according to Fitch Ratings. The international rating agency said the UK bank sector continued to generate excess capital and at least one bank was likely to launch a takeover of Abbey.
