The Carlyle Group, an American private equity group with close links to the Bush administration has emerged as a leading contender to acquire the shipbuilding business of BAE Systems, Britain's largest defence company. They are understood to have expressed an interest in recent weeks in buying the business, which was put up for sale by BAE earlier this year.
