Big supermarkets may face landholding sell-offs
01/11/2007
The Competition Commission's summary report could recommend that the UK's biggest supermarket chains should be forced to sell land holdings, in an effort to promote competition. The report has not however blasted the largest group, Tesco, as was expected, and instead has stated that shoppers in most areas had a good choice and benefited from strong competition between the retailers. Instead, to prevent land holdings and other practices that could drive competition down, they commented "Possible remedies include requiring grocery retailers to divest landholdings in areas where concentration is weak" .
