Global Crossing, the worldwide communications group which acquired Racal Telecom in 1999 for £1bn, has put the UK business up for sale for up to £500m. Potential buyers include Lattice, the gas network operator. The sale was sparked by Global Crossing's net loss of $3-4bn for the third quarter of the year. There is even speculation that Global Crossing may seek Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
