National Grid Transco has put up for sale five regional networks which deliver gas to homes and businesses in Scotland, Wales and parts of England. Each will be auctioned separately. The sale, which could raise £5bn or more, will allow NGT to focus on its core gas transmission business. The company is expected to return a substantial part of the sale proceeds to shareholders, with the rest earmarked for acquisitions.
