Olympus Corp, the Japanese medical equipment and digital camera maker, has announced that it has launched a £935m bid for Gyrus Group Plc, the British medical devices firm. 

Gyrus has recommended the offer, which works out at 630 pence per share. 

In a statement, Olympus said that the move was aimed at bolstering its medical equipment operations, with Gyrus's strength in minimally invasive surgery systems making it an attractive acquisition. 

The deal is set to create a medical systems business with revenues of around 360bn yen.
