TotalFinaElf, the French oil and chemicals group, is putting its paints business, SigmaKalon, up for sale for £1.2bn. This effectively means that Leyland and Johnstone's, two of Britain's oldest paint brands are now on the market. The most likely bidders will be US paint manufacturers, as well as UK private equity groups.
