UK Businesses For Sale

Akzo Nobel to sell Crown Paints

Dutch chemicals and paint giant, Akzo Nobel, has put its UK business, Crown Paints, on the market for up to £200m.

Investment bank, Greenhill, have been appointed to find buyers for Lancashire-based Crown.

The auction is likely to attract interest from buyers such as US companies eager to expand into Britain. It is thought that the American buildings materials and coatings company Sherwin-Williams, as well as PPG Industries and RPM International might put in bids.

Akzo have been pressurised by the European Commission to sell its UK paint business because its £8 billion takeover of ICI, last year, has given it too much dominance over the UK market.

Akzo’s purchase of ICI gave it control over Dulux, which is the largest paint manufacturer in Britain. Crown is the second largest manufacturer.

Akzo is due to dispose of a number of other businesses and sites across Europe to satisfy the European Competition authorities. These include manufacturing and warehousing sites in Belfast, Hull, and Dublin, as well as the Macpherson, Permoglaze and Sandtex brands.
