BA has bought French airline L'Avion
03/07/2008

British Airways has bought L'Avion, a privately owned French business-class airline that flies between Paris and New York, in a deal worth £54m.

The acquistion will boost the number of flights BA operates between the two cities. The move comes shortly after the company launched OpenSkies, which also serves the route.

OpenSkies was established to take advantage of the treaty with the same name between the US and Europe. The treaty allows airlines to fly from any European country, not just their home nation.

L'Avion flies two Boeing 757 jets, each with 90 seats, between Paris Orly and Newark. When the deal with BA is finalised, L'Avion will add to OpenSkies' existing daily service between Orly and New York JFK.

Dale Moss, managing director of OpenSkies and a former sales director of BA, has reportedly said the airline plans to have seven Boeing 757s in operation by the end of 2009, including the two operated by L'Avion.

L'Avion has flown 65,000 passengers since its January 2007 launch. L'Avion is the only survivor of the four all-business class airlines launched in recent years after Maxjet, Eos and Silverjet collapsed.
