BAA's ownership of the main three airports in South East England, and the Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen airports in Scotland, is being questioned after the Competition Commission reportedly decided that BAA's monopoly is harming the interests of passengers.
It has been reported that the commission will announce proposed reforms to the regulation and ownership of the UK airports sector next week.
The commission may conclude that the UK airports operator, will have to sell some of the airports currently in ownership. It has been suggested that BAA could be ordered to dispose of at least one airport in England, and one of its three airports in Scotland.
It is thought that the commission's report next week is likely to generate interest in BAA's airports from infrastructure investment funds and rival airport operators.
Gatwick airport, it has been speculated, could be sold for at least £2bn.
Grupo Ferrovial, the listed Spanish infrastructure operator, led a consortium which bought BAA in 2006 for £10.1bn.
