11/06/2008
Around 800 customer service jobs are likely to be saved after Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) agreed to buy Barclaycard's Goldfish call centre that had been threatened with the axe.
Barclaycard purchased Goldfish from Discover Financial Services for £35m, and had announced plans to close the North Lanarkshire-based centre by the end of 2008. The news comes a month after Barclaycard had told staff that their jobs would be transferred to other call centres in England. Staff will continue to serve Goldfish customers until the deal is completed. SSE operates customer service centres in Perth, Cardiff, Basingstoke and Portsmouth. The call centre's staff will be given the chance to retrain and work under Scottish and Southern Electricity, who hope to expand the workforce to 1000 within two years. Barclaycard will continue ongoing consultation and dialogue with the Goldfish staff, and fulfill obligations in terms of redundancy, according to chief executive Antony Jenkins. |
