UK Businesses For SaleBSkyB mulls a bid for Digital Plus
04/07/2008
British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB), the British pay-TV group, is considering making a bid of €2.5bn for Spanish pay-TV platform, Digital Plus.
It is expected that Grupo Prisa, Spain's largest media firm, will auction Digital Plus later this year in order to repay debts. Other possible bidders for Digital Plus are thought to include Vivendi, Telefónica, ONO and Orange, France Telecom's mobile arm. BSkyB has strong cashflow which should enable it to finance such an acquisition without too much difficulty. The UK satellite group had net debt of £1.91bn at March 31, and generated £614m in cash from operations in the first nine months of the year. It is thought that a bid by BSkyB could unsettle independent investors who believe that other investors come second to the long-term plans of Rupert Murdock at News Corp. News Corp, the US media conglomerate, owns 39 per cent of BSkyB. An alternative to a sale of Digital Plus would be an infusion of capital into Prisa from Carlos Slim, the Mexican telecoms magnate. |
