Local information: Surrey, South East
Surrey is one of the Home Counties in the south east of England, adjacent to London. It has a population of approximately 1.1 million and, owing to the large number of commuter towns and villages serving London, is fairly affluent compared to the rest of the UK.
Despite its high population density, Surrey contains a great deal of mature woodland and countryside and, agriculture not being particularly intensive, there are many commons and access lands, together with an extensive network of footpaths and bridleways, including the North Downs Way, a scenic long-distance path.
Surrey’s county town has changed several times over the centuries. Initially it was Guildford, a former site of the Royal Mint, but the county administration was moved to Newington in 1791, and then to Kingston upon Thames in 1893, where it remains, even though the town was included within Greater London by the London Government Act 1963.
