Local information: Cambridgeshire, East of England
Modern Cambridgeshire was formed from the historic counties of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, along with the Isle of Ely and the Soke of Peterborough, and centres round the county town of Cambridge, which contains the second-oldest university in the UK, as well as the modern Anglia Ruskin University and one of the regional centres of the Open University.
The county is the site of some of the earliest known Neolithic settlements in the UK, and was recorded in the Domesday Book as Grantbridgeshire, in reference to the river Granta (now the river Cam).
As well as the world-famous Cambridge, Cambridgeshire contains Peterborough and Ely, with their famous cathedrals, and the area known as ‘Silicon Fen’, because of its high concentration of software and electronics businesses. The county has also played host to numerous airbases, especially during WW2, owing to its flat terrain and proximity to the continent.
