Local information: Nottinghamshire, East Midlands

Nottinghamshire borders South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire, and has a population of around a million, over half of whom live in the conurbation of Greater Nottingham, which also takes up part of Derbyshire.

The City of Nottingham was administratively part of Nottinghamshire between 1974 and 1998, but is now a unitary authority, although it remains part of the ceremonial county. It is traditionally considered the county town, although the council is now based in West Bridgford.

Nottinghamshire has a strong industrial tradition: in Norman times the malting and woollen industries thrived, and during the industrial revolution canals and railways were introduced, and the lace and cotton industries grew. In the 19th century collieries opened and mining became an important economic sector, though it declined after the 1984-5 miners' strike.

The county is famous as part of the legend of Robin Hood, which attracts numerous tourists to Sherwood Forest and the City of Nottingham.
