Local information: Cumbria, North West
Cumbria is predominantly a rural county, and home to the Lake District National Park, considered one of the most beautiful areas in the UK, and beloved of generations of writers, artists and tourists. Much of the county is mountainous, and contains several of the UK’s highest peaks, including Scafell Pike, as well as parts of Hadrian’s Wall in the north.
Cumbria was created as a county in 1974 and was made up of territory from the historic counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, Lancashire and Yorkshire. The county’s six districts have a total population of 498,800, most of whom live in rural areas. Cumbria's largest settlement and only city, in the north of the county, is Carlisle, with the largest town, Barrow-in-Furness, being slightly smaller.
Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, along with other aspects of local culture, are displayed at the Grasmere Sports and Show, held every year since 1852.
