Local information: Renfrewshire, Scotland
Renfrewshire is one of three council areas contained within the boundaries of historic Renfrewshire, the other two being Inverclyde to the west and East Renfrewshire to the east. Although it contains the traditional county town of Renfrew, Renfrewshire’s administrative centre is actually in Paisley, the area’s main settlement, which became famous during the 18th and 19th centuries for its production of cloth with the distinctive ‘paisley’ pattern.
The county is home to Glasgow International Airport, which is served by the M8 motorway, a major transport link between northwest and southwest Scotland, which causes frequent congestion in the region. Although it is one of Scotland’s smallest unitary authorities, it is one of the country’s most populous areas, owing to its proximity to Glasgow.
Places of interest in the county include the historic Castle Semple Loch at Lochwinnoch, part of the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, and the Erskine Bridge, which spans the River Clyde.
