Local information: West Glamorgan, Wales
West Glamorgan was created on 1 April 1974, by the Local Government Act 1972 from the county borough of Swansea, the boroughs of Neath and Port Talbot, the urban districts of Glyncorrwg and Llwchwr, Gower Rural District, Pontardawe Rural District, and all of Neath Rural District except the parish of Rhigos. It was originally one of the divisions of the ancient county of Glamorgan.
West Glamorgan include the peninsula that makes up Swansea, the second most populous city in Wales after Cardiff, and formerly one of the key centres of the world copper industry.
To the north of the county are the Lliw uplands, which are mainly open moorland, reaching the foothills of the Black Mountain. To the west is the Gower peninsula, popular with walkers and outdoor enthusiasts, and the first area in the United Kingdom to be designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in 1956.
