Local information: Avon, South West
Avon is a former country located in the west of England, named after the River Avon which runs through the region.
In 1996, the county was abolished and the area was split between Bath and Northeast Somerset, the City of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. The Avon name is still in fairly wide use and the area has a population of approximately one million people.
The demise of the County of Avon was made into a documentary by the BBC. The End of Avon was shown on TV in 1996. Ten years later, the BBC Somerset presenter Adam Thomas investigated, in a BBC One regional programme Inside Out West, why Avon refuses to die. The county of Avon continues to be included in corporate addresses and in the names of organisations such as the Avon Wildlife Trust.
Several landscapes in the region retain the name of Avon. For example, the Forest of Avon covers part of the area of the four local authorities. They Avon Cycleway, an 85 mile circular route which was a precursor of the National Cycle Network, also carries the name of the former county.
