Local information: Hertfordshire, East of England
Hertfordshire is a ceremonial and non-metropolitan county in the East region of England. The county is one of the Home Counties and lies inland, bordered by Greater London, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Essex, with good transport links to London.
From the 1920s until the late 1980s, the town of Borehamwood was home to one of the major British film studio complexes, including the MGM-British Studios. Many well-known films were made here including the first three Star Wars movies (IV, V, & VI). The studios generally used the name of Elstree (the adjoining village).
Now part of the London commuter belt, Hertfordshire has in the past been a centre for watercress farming, brick-making and aircraft manufacture. There remain some sand and gravel mines in the St Albans area. The county contains the headquarters of many well-known UK companies, including Tesco, Comet, Skanska, de Havilland and DSG International.
