Local information: Cleveland, North East
Cleveland is a small county in the north east of England, created in 1974 under the Local Government Act of 1972, and named after the historical region of which is was a part. The area incorporates the Tees Estuary, and includes the towns of Middlesborough, Guisborough, Hartlepool and Redcar. Its name means ‘cliff-land’, and refers to its hilly southern areas, whose highest point is nearly 1,500 feet.
Despite its popularity among residents, Cleveland as a county was abolished in 1996, its boroughs becoming unitary authorities within North Yorkshire and County Durham and the Tees being re-established as a natural boundary between the two. The rationale for this abolition is widely believed to be Cleveland’s stigmatisation in the wake of a misreported child abuse scandal by the local authorities in 1987.
The area is geographically diverse, varying between the urban industrial area of the Tees Estuary, flat farmlands and the tall cliffs and hills of south and east Cleveland.
