Local information: County Antrim, Northern Ireland
County Antrim is situated in the north-east of Northern Ireland and bounded north and east by the Atlantic Ocean and Irish Sea. It has a population of approximately 616,384, most of them in and around the Belfast area, and it is one of two counties in Northern Ireland with a Protestant majority.
Its large towns include Antrim, the traditional county town, and Ballymena, the seat of county government until the reorganisation of local government in 1973, when the counties of Northern Ireland ceased to be administrative entities. The majority of the capital city of Northern Ireland, Belfast, is also in County Antrim, with the remainder being in County Down.
Most of Antrim is hilly, and the northern shore boasts an impressive cliffy coastline, as well as the world-famous Giant’s Causeway, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. The county is noted for its linen, and has in recent years become a tourist centre.
