Local information: Dumfriesshire, Scotland
Dumfriesshire is a registration county of Scotland and shares most of its boundaries with the lieutenancy area of Dumfries. Until 1975 it was a county with three traditional subdivisions (Annandale, Eskdale and Nithsdale); today it forms part of the Dumfries and Galloway council area.
The region is predominantly agricultural, with farmers breeding a mixture of cattle, sheep, pigs and horses. By the middle of the 19th century 20,000 head of heavy cattle were sent annually to the English markets. Sheep breeding, of later origin, has increased to remarkable dimensions, the higher hilly country being given over to Cheviots, and the richer pasture of the low-lying farms being reserved for half-bred lambs. Pig-farming, on the other hand, have declined owing to the prevalence of imported bacon.
The county is also famous for its tweeds, breweries and distilleries, as well as the shipyards of Annan and Dumfries and the salmon fisheries of the Solway Firth.
