In 1975 most of Stirlingshire was incorporated into the Central Region, with Kilsyth and the surrounding area becoming part of Strathclyde Region. Since 1996 the area of the former county has been part of the council areas of East Dunbartonshire, Falkirk, North Lanarkshire and Stirling.
The county town is Stirling, which lies on the River Forth and is laid out around a large fortress and a medieval town centre. it is often called the ‘gateway to the Highlands’, owing to its strategically important position between the Scottish Lowlands and Highlands. It is the centre of local government, higher education, retail, and light industry and has a population of roughly 41,243, making it the smallest city in Scotland.
