Local information: Glasgow, Scotland
Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and third most populous in the United Kingdom. It grew from the medieval Bishopric of Glasgow and the university which, alongside Edinburgh University, contributed to the Scottish Enlightenment. It was one of Europe’s main hubs of trans-Atlantic trade from the 18th century and, with the industrial revolution, became one of the world’s main centres of engineering and shipbuilding. Today it is one of Europe's top twenty financial centres and is home to many of Scotland's leading businesses.
Although the population of the city has decreased since the early 20th century, the entire region surrounding the conurbation covers approximately 2.3 million people, 41% of Scotland's population.
The city is situated on the River Clyde in the country's west central lowlands, and is famous for its towering Victorian tenements, which remain the most popular form of housing in Glasgow today.
