Local information: Orkney, Scotland
Orkney is an archipelago in northern Scotland, 10 miles north of the coast of Caithness, comprising over 70 islands. The region has been inhabited for at least 5,500 years, originally by neolithic tribes and later by the Picts. Orkney was invaded and finally annexed by Norway in 875 and settled by the Norse, before being re-annexed to the Scottish Crown in 1472.
More recently, Orkney has been the site of a major naval base. At the end of WW1 the German High Seas Fleet was transferred in its entirety to the area while a decision was to be made on its future; however, the German sailors opened their sea-cocks and scuttled all the ships. Most were salvaged, but the remaining wrecks are now a favoured haunt of recreational divers.
The local council is Orkney Islands Council, the only Council in Scotland in which all the elected members are independent.
