Local information: Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Aberdeenshire is located in the North East of Scotland and is one of the country’s richest historic heritages. Several Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeological sites are still in evidence today, such as Longman Hill, Kempstone Hill, Catto Long Barrow and Cairn Lee.

The present county name derives from the historic county of Aberdeen, which was abolished in 1975 under the Local Government (Scotland) Act and replaced by Grampian Regional Council. Today, Aberdeenshire has a population of approximately 227,000 and is divided into the Banff and Buchan district, the Gordon district and the Aberdeenshire council area.

Aberdeenshire’s population represents 4.5% of Scotland’s total. There has been a 20% increase in Aberdeenshire’s population since 1981 and a 50% increase since 1971.

Aberdeenshire has several places of interest, such as the royal residence Balmoral Castle and the historically important trackways of Causey Mounth and Elsick Mounth.
