Local information: Ayrshire, Scotland
Ayrshire is a former administrative county in the south west of Scotland. The town of Troon on Ayrshire’s coast has become known as a golfing destination, because it has hosted the British Open Golf Championship eight times – two of them in the last seven years. Further back in history, it was the members of Prestwick Golf Club who first created the British Open Championship in 1860 – the club hosted the event 24 times between that year and 1925.
Ayrshire is one of Scotland’s most agriculturally fertile regions. The fields near the coast are home to an abundance of potatoes, and the region also produces pork products, other root vegetables, cattle and strawberries.
The area also has an industrial background, especially in aviation. Prestwick and its international airport have long been the focus of Scotland’s aviation industry and even though aircraft manufacture ceased at the former British Aerospace plant in 1998, several aviation companies are still based on the Prestwick site.
