Local information: County Of Moray, Scotland
Moray lies on the north east coast of Scotland, bordering the Moray Firth, Until the Local Government (Scotland) Act of 1889, two large detached portions of Moray were situated in Inverness-shire, and part of Inverness-shire in Moray. In 1975, most of the county was combined with districts of the county of Banffshire to form the Moray district of the Grampian region. Nowadays the registration county, for property, is 'County of Moray', and a slightly smaller area, also based on the former county, is a lieutenancy area named 'Moray'.
Moray’s administrative and commercial centre is Elgin, a former catherdral city that was documented in the Cartulary of Moray in 1190 and created a Royal Burgh in the 12th century by King David I of Scotland. The area is famous for its mountainous scenery, and for the Glenlivet distillery, which has operated almost continuously since 1824 and produces 6 million bottles a year.
