Local information: Somerset, South West
Somerset is a rural county in south west England, rolling hills, such as the Mendip Hills, Quantock Hills and Exmoor National Park, and large flat expanses of land including the Somerset Levels. The area has been occupied since Neolithic times, and was setttled by the Romans and the Saxons.
The county is largely agricultural: sheep and cattle farms supply wool, and the county’s famous cheeses; willow farms support the basket-weaving industry, and apple orchards produce the strong cider traditionally associated with Somerset.
Unemployment is lower than the national average, and the largest employment sectors are retail, manufacturing, tourism, and health and social care. Population growth in the county is higher than the national average.
The status of county town transferred from Somerton to Taunton in 1366. Other major settlements include the cities of Wells and Bath, the latter of which became a World Heritage Site in 1987.
