Local information: Dorset, South West
Dorset is situated in South West England on the English Channel coast, and is famous for the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, which features landforms such as Lulworth Cove, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door, as well as the resorts of Bournemouth, Poole, Weymouth, and Lyme Regis.
Agriculture was once the principal industry of Dorset, but has seen a decline over the past few decades, as mechanisation has substantially reduced the number of workers required. However, tourism has grown steadily since the early 19th century, with several million visitors per year, both domestic and international.
The largest urban area is the South East Dorset conurbation, comprising the seaside resort of Bournemouth, the historic port of Poole and the town of Christchurch. There is also the radically different Poundbury, commissioned and co-designed by Prince Charles to integrate residential and retail buildings and counter the growth of dormitory towns and car-oriented development.
