Local information: Wiltshire, South West
Wiltshire is a land-locked ceremonial county in the south west of England, characterised by its high downland and wide valleys. Its geographical features include Salisbury Plain, a chalk plateau famous as the location of the Stonehenge stone circle and other ancient landmarks. Largely as a result of the establishment of the Army Training Estate Salisbury Plain, the plain is sparsely populated and is the largest remaining area of calcareous grassland in north-west Europe. Additionally the plain has arable land, and a few small areas of beech trees and coniferous woodland.
Wiltshire’s economy benefits from its position in the M4 Corridor, attracting numerous businesses, especially to Swindon, which is home to national and international corporations such as Honda, Intel, Motorola, Alcatel-Lucent, Becton-Dickinson, WHSmith, Early Learning Centre and Nationwide.
The city of Salisbury is notable for its medieval cathedral, and important country houses open to the public include Longleat and the National Trust's Stourhead.
