Local information: Gwent, Wales
Gwent is a preserved county and a former local government county in south east Wales. It was established as the County of Monmouthshire by Henry VIII in 1535, and became the modern county of Gwent on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972. It was named after the ancient Kingdom of Gwent, which flourished in the Welsh Marches between the 6th and 11th centuries.
Gwent was abolished on 1 April 1996, under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994. The name remains as one of the preserved counties of Wales used for certain ceremonial purposes, and also survives in the titles of various organisations, such as Gwent Police, the Royal Gwent Hospital, Coleg Gwent and the Newport Gwent Dragons rugby team.
The area is famous for its stone castles, built along the Welsh borders by the Normans in order to divide and control the region.
