Local information: Dyfed, Wales
Dyfed was one of the ancient kingdoms of Wales prior to the Norman Conquest. It was united with the neighbouring kingdom of Seisyllwg in the 10th century, under the rule of Hywel Dda, the boundaries of the new kingdom roughly corresponding to the modern preserved county of Dyfed.
The modern county was created by the Local Government Act 1972 on 1 April 1974 and covered the former counties of Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, being divided into local government districts. In 1996 the county was broken up once again, under the Local Government Act (Wales) 1994, and the ancient counties of Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire were restored. The name Dyfed was retained for purely ceremonial purposes such as Lieutenancy and is not used for geographical or postal purposes.
The region is famous for the rugged coastline of Pembrokeshire, and the fertile agricultural lands of Carmarthenshire, which have led to its being known as the ‘Garden of Wales’.
