Local information: Powys, Wales
Powys is the largest county in Wales and incorporates the historic counties of Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Brecknockshire. It is a mountainous region, and contains the source of the UK’s longest river (the Severn), near Llanidloes in the north of the county.
Most of the population live rurally, or in small towns and villages and just under a third of the residents have Welsh linguistic skills. Welsh speakers are concentrated mainly in the rural areas in and around Machynlleth, Llanfyllin and Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (where William Morgan first translated the whole Bible into Welsh in 1588) and the industrial area of Ystradgynlais.
Historically significant for its textile and flannel industry, and for its lead and silver mines, the area has experienced a decline in recent years, since the closure or relocation of several major employers.
In December 2007 Powys was awarded Fairtrade County status by the Fairtrade Foundation.
