Local information: Staffordshire, West Midlands

Staffordshire is a largely rural county, hilly in the north and the south, with wild moorlands in the far north and Cannock Chase, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the south. In the middle regions the surface is low and undulating. There are extensive coal fields throughout the county, as well as rich iron ore deposits in the south. The soil is chiefly clay and agriculture was not highly developed until the mechanisation of farms. The largest river is the Trent, unusual among English rivers in that it flows north, and a significant part of the National Forest also lies within Staffordshire’s borders.

Various nationally and internationally known companies are based in Staffordshire, including the Britannia Building Society and JCB. The theme park Alton Towers is located in the Staffordshire moorlands and several of the world’s largest pottery manufacturers are based in Stoke-on-Trent.
