Local information: Clwyd, Wales
Clwyd is situated in the north east of Wales, named after the river Clwyd, which runs through the region. It was a county with a county council between 1974 and 1996, when its administration was split into the unitary authorities of Flintshire, Wrexham County Borough, Denbighshire, and parts of Conwy and Powys, and Clwyd itself became a preserved county, with an estimated population of 491,100.
Many local organisations still use the name ‘Clwyd’, including the Clwyd Theatr Cymru and the Clwyd Area Scouts, and the name remains in common usage.
The east of the county is fairly urban, including areas such as Wrexham, Deeside and the commuter settlements close to Chester. The west is more rural, incorporating part of Snowdonia National Park, the Clwydian and Berwyn mountain ranges and the agricultural Vale of Clwyd. Coastal settlements in the north include Rhyl, Prestatyn, Abergele, Colwyn Bay and Llandudno.
