Cipriani London restaurant in a possible sale
15/07/2008

Cipriani, the famous Italian restaurant in London often frequented by celebrities, could be put on the market soon.

The owners, the Cipriani family, are thought to have appointed Goldman Sachs to advise on a potential sale.

It has not yet been made clear whether the entire group is for sale or a select number of sites.

Last August questions were raised about a possible sale after Giuseppe and Arrigo Cipriani pleaded guilty to tax fraud and promised to pay $10 million in back taxes. It was thought that the restaurant empire would have to be sold if they lost their alcohol license. They did not and the restaurants continued trading.

Giuseppe Cipriani established the first restaurant, Harry's Bar, in 1931 on the first floor of an abandoned rope warehouse in Venice.

The restaurant group has several sites in New York and Venezia. Famous people that have eaten in Cipriani's restaurants since its inception include author Ernest Hemingway and Queen Elizabeth II.
