Diageo may sell Guinness brewery site
09/05/2008

Diageo, drinks company, is to announce restructuring plans for its Irish Guinness business. This plan might include closing down a large part of its tourist attraction brewing site in Dublin. If that were to happen, a new replacement brewery would be built in Clondalkin, north of Dublin.

Diageo has announced that its brewries in Waterford, Kilkenny and Dundalk are to be closed, although spokesmen from the Guiness workers' union say the intended closures would be subject to negotiation.

Half of the 500m litres of stout, which is produced by the Dublin brewery each year, is exported.

Sales of Guinness in Ireland and the UK in recent years have taken a downturn, and the drink is now more popular in Nigeria than in any other country.

Increasing property values have also been a deciding factor in considering a sale of the site.

The 56-acre Dublin-based property has been valued at around £787m.
