17/06/2008

One of Scotland's largest food companies, Grampian Country Foods, has recently been acquired by the Dutch food producer, Vion, for an estimated £350m.

Grampian employs 17,500 staff worldwide. This includes 13,000 in the UK and 4500 in Thailand. The company's turnover is £1.8bn.

Vion already has four UK-based operations which produce bacon, pork, beef, sausages and pizzas.

Vion has an annual turnover of more than £5.5bn and employs 18,000 people in its international operation.

The Dutch company, which has a history of investment in the UK, has offered assurances on job security to Grampian employees.

Grampian was established in Banff in 1980 and has developed to become one of Scotland's largest private companies. The firm supplies the major supermarkets with chicken, pork, beef and lamb.

Grampian is to be integrated into Vion's UK operation, which is based in Kent.
