Borders UK considers selling some stores
Tue, 26 May 2009

Book retail chain Borders UK has brought in a restructuring firm to assist in the closure of some of its underperforming stores, it has been reported by The Independent.

RSM Bentley Jennison is looking into the options for Borders UK, one of which is to continue operations but with fewer outlets.

Luke Johnson's private equity firm Risk Capital Partners bought a controlling stake in Borders UK in 2007 from its American parent company for £20m. The purchase included all 41 Borders superstores in Britain, the superstore in Ireland along with all 28 Books etc stores in the UK.

Most of the stores in strong trading locations are said to be performing well, while others are finding it difficult. Some of the under performing stores, in out-of-town locations are likely to be sold.

Risk Capital has already reduced the number of Borders UK outlets since the purchase from 79 in 2007 to 37 today.

Brothers Tom and Louis Borders founded the American parent company in 1971.
