Coventry City Football Club facing administration
Wed, 31 Aug 2011

Coventry City Football Club is facing being placed into administration after a takeover deal led by former vice-chairman Gary Hoffman fell through.

While the consortium of investors are still interested in the club, talks of buying the club for £1 and injecting up to £30 million came to a standstill with Mr Hoffman reportedly accusing the City board of breaches of confidence. The move led to talk about the involvement of West Ham manager Sam Allardyce.

It is believed that if the club enters administration Hoffman’s main investors, understood to be the internet-based football merchandise firm CuJu8, would be willing to resume discussions once more.

In the meantime the club’s present owners Sisu are to continue to find ways of cutting costs, with one player Ben Turner preparing to move to Birmingham City or Cardiff.

The idea that the bid may have disobeyed league rules if successful - since Allardyce is a director of CuJu8’s parent company Game8 - was dismissed by Mr Hoffman. Mr Allardyce was not connected to the club when the plan was first conceived.

“Coventry City fans should be delighted that I have contacts that would enable that sort of person to be helping in the background or be involved as an investor,” Mr Hoffman said.
