Setanta close to administration
Mon, 08 Jun 2009

It is thought likely that Setanta, one of Britain's largest sports broadcasters, will shortly be placed into administration as it has failed to secure a deal that would rescue the business.

The company has also failed to make a payment of £3m to the Scottish Premier League due on broadcasting rights for the last season.

Setanta purchased the rights to broadcast 46 live Premier League football matches each season in 2006. It is expected that Setanta will be able to show fewer matches next year.

Deliotte is currently on standby to take over Setanta, which is thought to be losing £90m per year. If Setanta fails to secure funding and goes into administration, a sale of TV rights is likely to take place.

The Irish broadcaster's supporters, including Goldman Sachs, have refused to provide more than £50m. Setanta will require £100m to continue as a going concern.

It is also due to make a payment of £35m to the Barclays Premier League in the coming weeks.
