Pontin's holiday company sold to former owner
28/03/2008

Pontin's, the British holiday village operator, has been sold for £46m to a company headed by Graham Parr, the entrepreneur who previously owned the business in the 1980s.

Pontin's is in the process of being sold by Trevor Hemmings, the Blackpool Tower owner, who has already bought and sold the business once before. He and Mr Parr sold Pontin's to Scottish & Newcastle in 1989, two years after buying the then 23-site business from leisure group, Bass. Some of the sites were closed, however, and Hemmings bought back most of the remaining business from Scottish & Newcastle in 2000.

Mr Parr said he saw potential for Pontin's villages in several areas including, Blackpool, Southport and Camber Sands, where 750,000 people go on holiday each year.

Mr Parr is also considering various ways of selling the vacation space, including offering customers an opportunity to buy apartments on the sites.

The business was founded by Fred Pontin in 1946, with the first camp being established at Brean Sands in Somerset. The holiday camp was originally designed for family holidays for soldiers returning from World War Two.
