RPC under strategic review
10/06/2008

RPC, Europe’s largest producer of rigid plastics packaging, is currently under a strategic review in order to explore the options for increasing shareholder value. It is understood that RPC believe its depressed share price does not reflect its strong market position and growth prospects.

Possibilities for the business include a sale of some assets, the whole business, or a significant restructuring.

UK-based RPC has been valued at around £200m. Rothschild is advising the company.

It is thought that the announcement of a strategic review will attract interest from competitors and private equity, and increase the possibility of a break-up of the company.

Potential bidders could include Rexam, or Atorka, the Icelandic private equity group that has built a stake in RPC. Two others might be the Danish private equity firm Ratos, which owns the plastics group Superfos, and the US buyout fund Apollo.

The business produces rigid plastic containers for large European consumer firms in the beauty and personal care sectors, vending and drinking cup markets, margarine and spreads industry, and in companies manufacturing multi-layer sheet and packaging for oxygen-sensitive and other food products.
