A large number of so-called "business buyers" never actually buy a business. Business brokers are used to sifting through large numbers of unqualified and unsuitable candidates and will filter these enquiries on behalf of the seller. So how do you demonstrate from the first approach that you are a serious buyer with the means and motivation to buy the business if the deal is right?

If you are approaching the seller direct, it may be even harder to get a response. These people will be inundated with enquiries and may be wary of “buyers” who lack tact and ask too many questions too soon. At the same time, you need to know what it is appropriate to ask at this stage and how to go about it so that you do not waste your time pursuing unsuitable prospects.
