Acquirers circling distressed London streetwear brand Trapstar

West London streetwear label Trapstar has entered administration after failing to secure fresh investment, with administrators from Interpath Advisory appointed to manage a formal sale of the business. Frasers Group and Footasylum are both understood to be among the prospective buyers.

The company, which designs and sells hoodies, tracksuits and other garments, appointed Interpath on 29 May 2026 following a two-month search for new funding. The administration covers Trapstar International Limited and associated entities, which together employed 57 people at the time of filing.

Trapstar was founded in 2005 by three friends from west London, known publicly only as Mikey, Lee and Will, who began by printing their own T-shirts and selling them from their cars and at Portobello Market. The founders deliberately cultivated a sense of exclusivity around the brand in its early years, distributing on an invite-only basis and relying on word of mouth rather than conventional retail channels.

Over two decades, Trapstar grew into one of Britain's most recognisable streetwear labels, earning endorsements from Rihanna, Jay-Z, Stormzy and Central Cee, and completing a notable collaboration with Puma in 2015-16. The brand is reported to have generated more than £100 million in cumulative revenue since its founding.

The collapse follows a sharp deterioration in the company's finances since its peak in 2022. Revenue that year reached just under £40 million, buoyed by pandemic-era demand for the hoodies, tracksuits and puffer jackets that form the core of Trapstar's range. By 2024, turnover had fallen to £17.7 million - a decline of more than 55% in two years. Profitability tracked a similar trajectory, with pre-tax profit falling from £7.4 million to £1.2 million in 2023 alone.

Separate Companies House filings for Trapstar International Limited show turnover of £29.47 million in accounts made up to 31 December 2023, reflecting the mid-decline position. At the time of administration, the company's four directors were drawing combined annual remuneration of £3.6 million against a business generating sharply reduced returns.

Management sought to distinguish between structural demand weakness and a cash flow problem rooted in working capital. Their formal statement read: "Recent revenue decline has primarily been driven by working capital constraints impacting inventory availability, rather than any underlying demand or brand performance." The argument, in essence, was that consumer appetite for the product remained intact but the company could no longer fund sufficient stock to meet it.

The company's own 2024 accounts offered a more direct account of the pressures, noting it had faced "a challenging year for the business as both our customers and our supply chain had to deal with rising inflation against the backdrop of an uncertain economic outlook... we saw an increase in costs which led to a fall in our operating margin." Rising post-pandemic inflation and supply chain disruption compressed margins even as Trapstar's drop-model retail strategy - releasing limited collections via social media to create scarcity - continued to generate brand engagement. The approach, which had helped build the label's reputation over two decades, required consistent inventory investment that became increasingly difficult to sustain as the financial position deteriorated.

Will Wright, UK CEO at Interpath, said: "We hope to wrap up a sale of the business in short order." Sources familiar with the situation have described strong interest from potential buyers, and the administration process is expected to move quickly.

Among those understood to be examining a bid are Frasers Group, the retail conglomerate controlled by Mike Ashley, and Footasylum. Frasers - which owns Sports Direct, House of Fraser and Flannels - has an established record of acquiring distressed retail brands at reduced valuations. Footasylum, the sportswear and streetwear retailer, recently signed a strategic partnership with Apparel Group to expand across the Gulf Cooperation Council region, indicating an appetite for brand-led growth.

Trapstar's administration coincided with that of BrandAlley, a members-only premium fashion retailer that also entered administration on 29 May, underscoring the continuing stress across British fashion retail. The streetwear segment has faced a wider correction following the unwinding of pandemic-era demand, with consumer spending under pressure and persistent cost inflation continuing to squeeze margins across the sector.

For any acquirer, the primary consideration is likely to be Trapstar's brand equity - built over two decades of celebrity association and a carefully managed scarcity model that has maintained the label's currency among younger consumers. Any rescue deal would also secure the 57 jobs at risk following the appointment of administrators.
