Administrators are seeking to secure buyers for the assets of a kitchen appliance company based in East Kilbride, following its collapse earlier this month. Merchant City Distributors Limited, based on the Kelvin Industrial Estate, had been in business for 25 years prior to entering administration.
The company, which served as a supplier, distributor and installer of gas and electrical products, fell into administration as a result of a range of adverse factors, particularly “detrimental” supply chain issues and a challenging wider trading environment.
As a result, the joint administrators said, Merchant City Distributors’ directors concluded that the business had no viable future and the company had ceased trading. Directors subsequently appointed administrators on April 7 2026, with all 18 staff at the business made redundant.
The joint administrators cited broader economic pressures as a major contributor to the collapse of the longstanding company, saying they had significantly impacted the firm’s ability to trade and ultimately left administration as the only option.
Following their appointment, the joint administrators are now focused on realising the company’s assets for the benefit of its creditors, while processing employee claims.
Merchant City Distributors Limited’s accounts are overdue at Companies House, with its most recently available accounts covering the year to December 31 2023.
In that filing, the company’s fixed assets were valued at slightly more than £1.1 million, while current assets were valued at over £1.5 million. The company’s net assets at the time totalled close to £454,000.
Financial distress is rising sharply among UK businesses, with small and medium-sized firms particularly at risk of insolvency.
Soaring tax, wage and financing costs are being exacerbated by persistently high inflation, while political uncertainty and ongoing geopolitical upheaval are leading to supply chain issues and affecting already fragile consumer confidence.
