Administrators exploring options for £18m-turnover pottery business

Denby Pottery Company, a longstanding Derbyshire-based pottery manufacturer, has fallen into administration. Administrators from Alvarez & Marsal are reportedly exploring options for the company’s assets.

The company, which was founded in 1809, primarily sells handcrafted stoneware tableware, kitchenware and serviceware, with products including mugs, serving dishes and dinner sets. Over the years, it has also expanded its offering into cast-iron cookware and glassware products.

The company has experienced challenging trading conditions in the past, having previously been rescued in 2009 by investment from Hilco Capital. Over recent years, tighter financial markets have impacted its ability to secure additional funding.

Denby Pottery has also experienced a drop in demand, alongside rising energy costs, leading to further financial strain. The company’s assets include nine standalone stores and 13 concessions, which are at risk of closure.

Despite falling into administration, the company, along with subsidiaries Burgess and Leigh, will continue trading, as will the firm’s international subsidiaries.

A spokesperson said: "Denby and Burgess & Leigh are continuing to trade while all options for the future of the companies are being explored. International subsidiaries such as Denby Korea continue to trade as normal at this time. The priorities remain supporting employees, customers, suppliers, and retail partners while working with advisers to determine the best possible outcome for all stakeholders.”

In accounts for the year to December 29 2024, The Denby Pottery Company Limited reported turnover of £18.6 million, down 17 per cent from £22.3 million a year earlier, while operating profit fell from £908,000 to £628,000. At the time, directors cited decreased customer confidence amid a range of geopolitical and inflationary economic challenges.

At the time, its fixed assets were valued at £1.3 million and current assets at around £46.4 million, with net assets totalling close to £11.4 million.
