Administrators have been appointed at a Yorkshire-based retro fashion brand that had established a strong reputation for its distinctive womenswear collections. Joanie Limited, which was based in Skipton, North Yorkshire, was well known for its loyal global customer base.
The company, which was founded in 2016, had also developed a reputation for its strong ethical values. Focused on “slow fashion”, the online-only company was a B-Corp that produced retro-inspired, sustainable clothing lines, including knitwear and dresses, featuring bright nostalgic prints and had also branched out into footwear. Joanie frequently collaborated with celebrities and institutions, including Dawn O’Porter and the Natural History Museum.
Despite its solid brand identity, the company had faced significant financial challenges over recent years, being hit by headwinds including Brexit-related disruption, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, persistent economic uncertainty and increasing barriers to international trade.
As a result of these challenges, Alastair Massey and Phil Armstrong of FRP were appointed as joint administrators of Joanie Ltd on January 20 2026. Upon the appointment of the joint administrators, the brand ceased trading, with all 13 employees made redundant.
The joint administrators will now focus on realising Joanie Limited’s remaining assets for the company’s creditors, while supporting affected staff and providing information on making claims to the Redundancy Payments Service.
Alastair Massey, restructuring advisory partner at FRP and joint administrator of Joanie Ltd, commented: "Joanie established a well-regarded brand with a loyal following, but a prolonged period of difficult trading conditions ultimately proved insurmountable. Our immediate priority is to support affected employees and to maximise realisations for the benefit of creditors."
In a statement, the company said: “Brexit, Covid, economic uncertainty, and most recently barriers to international growth in the form of new tariffs and conflicts, each have taken their toll.” The statement added that, despite seeking to respond to these adverse trading conditions, the company had been unable to continue trading.
In accounts for the year ending December 31 2023, Joanie Limited’s fixed assets were valued at slightly more than £54,000, while current assets amounted to approximately £4.5 million. However, the company’s net liabilities at the time exceeded £4.8 million.
